Oswaldo e Cecília tiveram um filho ao qual deram tudo do bom e do melhor esperando que quando ficassem velhinhos fossem cuidados por ele. Ele cresceu, casou-se, pôs os pais no asilo, mudou-se para Paris e nunca mais apareceu.

Minha sugestão é a expressão "fall flat on your face", que fala de "cometer um erro ou fracassar de maneira vergonhosa." Literalmente, equivale a "cair de cara no chão".
