Oswaldo e Cecília fell flat on their faces.
Minha sugestão é a expressão "fall flat on your face", que fala de "cometer um erro ou fracassar de maneira vergonhosa." Literalmente, equivale a "cair de cara no chão".
Veja um bom comentário definindo a expressão, retirado do Wordreference UK:
To fall flat on your face means 'to make a mistake or fail in an embarrassing way.' For example, a businessman may make an investment in the stock market, thinking that he will make a huge profit. He may boast about it to his friends. When he finds that he has lost everything because he made a bad choice, he is said to have fallen flat on his face. If Bonds decided to jump off the Empire State Building there wouldn't be much of him left, so he wouldn't know the humiliation of having fallen flat on his face.
