Existe a expressão "to bury your head in the sand", mas que eu saiba não significa estar com vergonha, mas sim não querer encarar uma qualquer realidade, ignorar a realidade, fazer de conta.
Já ouvi "I wanted to go hide somewhere" ou coisa semelhante, para quando uma pessoa está envergonhada.

The correct answer would be: To sweep under the rug
