They always might say "a carrion kite will never make a good hawk."
In African countries and culture they sometimes also use the metaphorical imagery iwith "crocodiles".
So they say "a lizard can never be a crocodile" and "no matter how long a log stays in the water, it doesn't become a crocodile." (it's on the Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs)
It make the point that you can’t be something you’re not and thus stresses the importance of just being yourself.
"Even if agama lizard lives close to the river, it can never be like the crocodile." is a Nigerian proverb.
There are proverbs with slightly different contexts:
"A lizard in the village will never be a crocodile in the city."
If you fail to be a lizard in your own land, you will fail to be a crocodile in another land.
