Doesn't "triage" in English mean the same as "triagem" in Portuguese?

Henry,
I had never heard "triage" before. Looking it up in Macmillan, I found "the process of deciding which people in a hospital department should get medical treatment first, according to how serious their condition is"
Is triage limited to this? If so, I would say that the meaning in Port. is similar, but not applicable only to hospitals.
Triagem:
1 Escolha ou separação em três classes ou ramos.
2 Lugar onde se faz esta seleção.
3 Separação de pessoas ou coisas em qualquer número de classes.

Hi,
It seems to me that triage applies more broadly to many processes of classifying or allocating priority, but the common element seems to be situations of stress or crisis and limited resources. I've also seen it used to designate a place for such an activity (a triage centre, for ex.). Seems to be pretty similar to the meaning in Portuguese. Regards

I've just researched on internet and found many websites about the origin of the word. Both the Portuguese "triagem" and the English "triage" comes from the French term "triage", meaning to separate, sort, sift or select, (...)determining the order and priority of emergency treatment, the order and priority of emergency transport, or the transport destination for the patient (s: Wikipedia).
I don't know what was Mackvader's context for it, but here in Brazil we use "triagem" for many different occasions, eg: "Triagem of applicants's CVs for a job vacancy", "triagem" of seeds (separation of good and bad ones), “triagem” of trash to be recycled, etc.
As Henry said, it's been used to "many processes of classifying or allocating priority, but the common element seems to be situations of stress or crisis and limited resources", so I believe that "triage" meaning may be being broadened in North Am., but isn't still as broaden as it is in Brazil.
Triagem de currículos = 239.000 ocorrências no Google
Curriculum triage = 107
Triagem de lixo = 324.000
Trash triage = 1.960
regards
