British and American English
Eu terminei o email com uma frase "You are top notch", eles caíram na gargalhada. Realmente não sei o motivo de tanta graça. Mas eles complementaram dizendo que a expressão era uma expressão muito britânica.
O "You are top notch" é o nosso "Você é 10!"
Do you agree?
See you guys!

"Top notch" may be older slang, Daniel. I recall hearing more often when I still had hair. Other expressions include "a class act, first cabin, first class, outstanding, etc." Really old slang incudes "the berries, the cat's meow, etc.'

Usually I use " you are rock" or "you are top notch" it is very commun on american series.
Olá Alessandro,
É britânica e talvez clássica, digamos.

But probably old-fashioned isn't it Thomas?

No britânico, acho que é isso mesmo. No americano a gente solta o básico "You are awesome!" ou "You rock!".

Haha, valeu! =D
Conheço o blog já faz uns dois anos, na verdade, tive uma professora de Inglês na escola que mostrou, mas nunca fui muito fã de entrar em vários fóruns.
Até que comecei a ver os twits do EE e pensei "Ah, to hell with it, I've got nothing to lose anyway" e o resto é história... Ou VAI SER história, sei lá...
Agora me lembrei daquela música "You are the best, arooound, nothing's ever gonna keep you down" hahahadonay mendonça escreveu:Pessoal,

The sign is not that vulgar, we use it for "OK" too, but it may be according to the region, in my state (Santa Catarina), at least, it isn't.

"You are rock" não tem esse sentido, "you are rock" é "você é (resistente como) uma pedra", para o sentido de "você é 10" ou "você é o cara" tem que ser "you rock", usando "rock" como verbo.claudemircloud escreveu:Usually I use " you are rock" or "you are top notch" it is very commun on american series.
Hey there folks!
As mentioned, the (informal) expression top-notch refers to things or people of superior quality; outstanding
You guys rock/ You guys are awesome/ You guys rule
Some other synonyms are: ace, first-rate, super, tops
Hence, we could say: - That was a super party!
- William Bonner is an ace reporter!
- She is absolutely tops!
- They play top-notch tennis!
It appears to me that your use of this expression came out of the left field and surprised everyone!

Eu usaria "you're the best" ou "you rock" (rock verbo, não o "adjetivo"), assim como "you rule".
Top notch is used in the USA too.
As well as "top notch" you can use the expression "top hole" which can be accompanied by a gesture made with the thumb and first finger making a ring or hole.(Very similar to a vulgar Brazilan gesture.)
On my arrival in Brazil in 1983 I went for a work medical accompanied by a bilingual guy from work. The doctor asked me if I was OK and I told him I was top hole and made the gesture. When we left the doctor's surgery my "transalator" was rolling on the floor laughing as I had just told the doctor he was an *sshole.
