Correção de frase "They were able to do a test..."

Hi guys. How are you today?

I'd like if the following sentence is writen correctly: they were able to do a test if they sudy for it.

Olá Milton,

Desta forma não fica bom,veja possibilidades:

They were able to do a test,if they studied for it.-->Me parece muito hipotética esta possibilidade.
They will be able to do a test,if they study for it.
They would have been able to do a test,if they had studied for it.
They would be able to do a test if they studied for it.

*Diga-nos o sentido em português para podermos te ajudar melhor...

Repetindo o Donay, os tempos verbais têm que se encaixar:

They were able to do the test because they studied for it. (conseguiram ...because... haviam estudado)
They would have been able to...if they had studied... (teriam conseguido ...se...tivessem estudado)
Etc.

Qual era a sua intenção?
