Pay off x Lay off - Tradução em português

Hello everyony.

Gostaria por gentileza que alguém pudesse me esclarecer a diferença dos Phrasal Verbs Pay off e Lay off, pois não consegui identificar quando utilizar um ou outro.

Segue abaixo alguns exemplos de frases que não consegui entender o sentido da expressão em cada uma delas:
1) An experiment that would pay off in the apples;
2) We've had to lay off several competent employees.
3) The introduction of soya may pay off;
4) Someone you forgot to pay off;
5) Hopefully your investment will pay off;
6) It should be noted that total wages paid decreased given the lay off of staff.
7) The banks must pay off their debts to government;
