Firemen, policemen, nurses, and others often work very unusual schedules. I had friends who worked, for example, 16 hours + 16 hours + 8 hours. They were then free for four days. Some firemen work 24 hours on duty + rest + 24 hours duty, free for four days. Nurses sometimes work 12 hours + 12 hours + 12 hours but are paid for 40 hours, not 36.
These work periods are sometimes called "watches", especially among policemen and firemen. A watch commander is in charge of the men of each of these watches. The watches solve some problems and causes others.
A "shift" is usually 8 hours long. Someone working a "rotating shift" works days one week, afternoon/evenings one week, and nights one week. Fun, huh?
