Notes:

(1) Night, I Stand is the closing musical theme of the animated movie Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, a 2013 anime film produced by Gonzo, based on PlatinumGames' 2009 video game, Bayonetta. The Japanese pop singer, Mai (舞), whose real name is Mai Kudo (工藤 舞, Kudō Mai) was invited by Avex Entertainment and contributed to this theme song in Japanese and English versions.

(2) To whistle in the dark is an idiom, which means to pretend to be unafraid;

(3) The expression drowning in the sands comes from the idiom to bury / have your head in the sand, which means to refuse to think about unpleasant facts, although they will have an influence on your situation. The use of the verb to drown in this situation lead us to think how much depressed the interpreter is to the point of burying her head in the sand deeply.

In Brazil, we have a similar idiom, afogar as mágoas. Initially, it meant to get drunk to forget about bad times. Nowadays it is used to talk about any activity people do in order to forget about their sorrows, or put them aside for the moment. These activities can be overeating, going to parties, practicing sports, and so on.
