Sobre a tradição brasileira: que eu me lembre, haviam os discursos do orador da turma (que nem sempre era o melhor aluno da sala, mas sim uma pessoa escolhida por algum motivo). Pelo que li sobre a tradição americana, quem faz o tal discurso é o melhor aluno, que recebe o título de Valedictorian. - Valedictorian is an academic title conferred upon the highest ranked student among those graduating from an educational institution (Wikipedia)
Tem também o discurso do paraninfo, que tanto pode ser um professor homenageado, ou alguma outra pessoa da sociedade (empresário, político, etc.). Encontrei a opção "commencement speaker", mas o tópico está, obviamente, aberto para novas/melhores sugestões.

E quanto a "Graduation Speech" eu já vi essa em algum lugar da internet. Me avisem se eu estiver errada! ^^

What is a Valedictorian or Graduation Speech?
Let's define this first, as this will assist in identifying what should make up such a speech.
A Valedictorian or Graduation Speech is
- A closing or farewell statement, address or oration, especially
one delivered at a graduation ceremony
- An oration or address spoken at commencement in American
colleges or seminaries by one of the graduating class.
A graduation speech (or what could be called a valedictory speech) is an inspirational and persuasive speech.
The AIM is to thank, exalt, stimulate to action, motivate, to affect and touch, even to raise to a higher emotional level, and finally to say farewell.
This is quite a role for a graduation speech to play, would you agree?
