Indeed it sounds like the ole good battle raged between the prescriptive and descriptive grammar rules.

Many (I think) would say that the way to say that is "The lost dog responds to his name, Xena" or "Lost dog: responds to the name Xena." etc.

In a prescriptive way, one more prone to usage as it is, would say okay to that sentence. Or would just not say a thing, because it´s a established way.
Prescriptive wins.
OR "answers by the name."

Exemplo: (cachorro perdido ...) Our dog ANSWERS BY THE NAME of Rocket, it is a white cockel poodle, he did not have his dog tag, he only had a black collar. He was last seen on Sawyer...

Sugiro a preposição "to" com "answer": answers to the name of Rex
  • The dog answers to the name of Rex.
  • O cachorro atende pelo nome de Rex.
  • This dog answers to the name (of) “Rover.” (Merriam-Webster)
  • Este cachorro responde/atende pelo nome de "Rover".
Bons estudos.
