You are on the right path, to a degree, that is. I am going to explain, variety is the spice of life (someone said and I agree with him), so you get to Reddit, Comic Books and all that jazz.
But there´s a catch here. How is your use of the words? Okay, you "get to know" a word then you see it somewhere else, you get to your cards and voilá! You learn that you did get it before!
That´s my impression from what I read, so don´t get me wrong, I could be mistaken...
I suggest that instead of succumbing to the urge to go to the Anki cards, you see some possible different contexts on sites like Linguee/Reverso/Bab.la, for instance.
Your readings are a must-read, add to it some daily doses of Dilbert (for example, but it could be another comic strips of your choice.
If you wish, you can even go further. Think about what you read, as if you had an exercise, the task would be answer the strip of the current day.
Then, I say only then, you would go down and see that under the strip there is always a comment (from someone else). Try to see (to understand) the point of view of the reader, see it involves something of the American culture or if it applies to the universal reader (a universal truth).
If I got it. You describes the feeling:
"when I see the word from Anki in another place it comes in a whole new context - as if it was a new word" (quando vejo ela fora do anki ela some da cabeça e vira uma palavra nova.)
That´s why I don´t count words, let´s imagine the word "shot" it could mean:
Trago (de bebida)/gole
Chute (nice shot - belo chute!)
Lance (em futebol ou outro desporto/jogo)
And so on...
Sometimes we find a sentence that gets remarkable exactly because it can have a very absurd ring to it. You could understand in a very different way:Result: I take my camera and shot the poisonous animal.
Resultado: eu peguei minha câmera e filmei a peçonhenta.
(source: the site www.linguee.com
To many, first thing that would spring to mind would be the "imagery" of the "poisonous snake being killed" (shot, see?), but then only if the camera was a James Bond´s device, sort of.
The unusual situation would be some "remarkable", with time somebody gets used to the association "camera" plus "shot" and will understand that it will have a movie/taping quality to the sentence. A day will come that it´s instinctive, the context will be known right at the reading of it.
