Tradução de "methinks", "doth", etc

Hello everybody,

Tive a mesma curiosidade da Flávia e percebi o grande número de ocorências no Google ao colar a frase, e assim como ela citou, parece mesmo que ela tem origem "feminina" The lady doth protest too much, methinks. porem desconhecia ser de Hamlet. A princípio queria apenas a equivalencia da frase e fiquei feliz em saber mais essa "curiosidade" do idioma.

That's an excellent insight, Flávia. As I read your post, I kept thinking that even English speakers sometimes use the expression without proper attention to its nuanced origin, probably because it's so well known and florid language. In other words, they use it for the surface meaning without the undertones.

Eu me interessei pela frase pq é estranha e pq existe uma música da Alanis Morissette chamada "Doth I protest too much" (btw, já discutida aqui no fórum). Mas fiquei intrigada que a quantidade de ocorrências da frase postada pela flordelis aparece milhares de vezes no Google. Acabo de descobrir a razão: a frase foi dita por um tal de Hamlet - by William Shakespeare

Trata-se de linguagem incomum, informal.

"Methinks" é uma maneira antiga de se dizer "I think"(eu acho).

"Doth" é uma maneira antiga de se dizer "does", que neste caso é usado para dar ênfase.

"Eu acho que o cavalheiro protesta demais."
