I'm a huge fan of USA TV series. Earlier today I was reading a review of the 8th episode of The Walking Dead's 3rd season. It turns out that there was a sentece which I didn't understand the meaning.
Could you guys, please, help me with the translation (especially the sentence in bold)?

"Though the fact that there was an easy way into the prison from the back seems to indicate some very poor inspection work by Rick’s group, but hey, they’ve had it just a little rough of late, so we can cut them some slack..."
