Vou deixar o exemplo abaixo :
"Her cheek peek back into my peripheral as she leaned in"
Poderiam me ajudar?

Same as "her cheek came back into my side view, as she leaned in."
Meaning "her cheek came back to be seen by me" to my right or left, without turning my neck. So, it wasn´t directly in front of me. I saw it indirectly, using the peripheral vision.

I agreed with Swarm, one has to make a mental gymnastics to get to the meaning. The author could just state that "she leaned in, then her cheek came back within reach of my peripheral vision".
If she leaned in, it suggest that she was outside of the place the author was.
All in all, the wording was of someone that tried to use "flowery language" but seems like he/she overdone it. Sometimes, kis (keeping it simple) is a better option.
