Refusing to do tasks, ignoring people, get sulky and refusing to do things or being sarcastic could be outward expressions of resentment (ficar de bico/fazer bico).

"Surly attitude" could mean "uma atitude de fazer "beicinho/ficar de bico/fazer bico).
Respectfully approaching, offering active and patient listening, not forcing and not becoming discouraged because of surly attitudes, offering sharing and closeness do good to others, even though the result is not always that which was hoped for.
