I might not be entirely sure what you mean by someone being "direito/certo" but i'll give it a shot:

I thought you always went by the book(idiomatic)
I thought you were more of the politically correct type.
I didn't think you were one to break the rules.

I believe you were looking for more alternatives in the form of an adjective for "certo/direito" in that context and unfortunately I won't be able able to provide you more of those as I can't recall anything other than "politically correct" off the top of my head. Hopefully others will come up with more suggestions.

Hmm, Melissa. Maybe you meant something like "I thought you were pretty uptight. (no "night outs", etc) [uptight in the sense of "conservador/certinho" etc.]

"Now you surprise me! I thought you were more prudish/straight-laced."

There are more words and expressions to that: prim and proper/conservative/conventional.
To soften it, it would be expressed in mock horror (easier to be expressed in spoken than written English, though.)

But, obviously, I could be mistaken and have not understood what you meant. It happens...
