Ele está se fazendo de durão para não parecer que é fraco, mas ele precisa de um ombro amigo para desabafar.

A bit more lenghty, tough. Anyway, in a conversation you could break the piece into two parts, choosing one. Say, could choose the "getting things off his chest." or simply that he needs a "friendly shoulder."
In spoken English things tend to be shortened a tad.
