Como dizer "Mosquiteiro" em inglês

That's odd. A mosquito is a "pernilongo". A fly is a "mosca."

What's a "fly swatter" in Portuguese? You know, those things for killing flies: um mata-mosca?

Ok. In Portuguese, 'mosca' or 'mosquito' mean the same thing. In English, it's a fly. It's for the mosquito (pernilongo) that we think of putting up nets for (not normally in Canada, unless you're camping or something).

To prevent flies from entering our houses, we have window and door screens (telinhas). Flies are mostly nuisances.

Mosquitoes, on the other hand, bring serious illnesses, such as the West Nile virus (even in Canada), or even dengue in warmer areas (but not yet in Canada, I don't think).

I guess some people will just mistake flies for mosquitoes.

I thought that's what I was saying, in the two languages, in everyday parlance:

Fly (Eng) = Mosca, mosquito (Port)
Mosquito (Eng) = Pernilongo (Port)

The distinction in English is well-observed for houseflies as opposed to mosquitos.

In rural Canada, and especially way up North in their short summer , there are deer flies and horse flies that bite you like crazy. They are big, nasty, vicious things. They aren't houseflies.
