Qual a diferença entre as palavras Travel e Trip?

Olá,

Eu li em algum lugar que se deve usar "travel" como o verbo viajar e "trip" como viagem no singular ou plural, e "travels" como viagens no plural.
Assim,
I bought this in my trip to Turkey. (correto)
I bought it in my travel to Turkey. (errado)
I met them in a travel. (errado)
I met them in a trip. (correto)
I bought them in my travels. (correto)
I bought them in my trips. (correto)

Embora, eu ache que "I bought them while traveling" soa melhor.

Essa questão do "trip" e "travel" como substantivos confere ou é uma questão de preferência?
