The bard of Avon was the sobriquet of William Shakespeare.
The term bard originally meant a friend who likes writing poems (site Freelance Writing).
In the Celtic culture, a bard was a storyteller.
I also learned that many things in the English language changed at his time, plus his plays contributed to the standardization of English. He made an impact, and the chat programmer might have made a comparison of sorts, or at least was inspired by the actual bard (of Avon).
