That x Which: Qual a diferença

Either one works. However, if you were to set off the second one by commas (...,which...corner,...), the meaning would be somewhat altered. If you don't intend to use commas, you're better off with "that." Do you see it that way too?

Are we, in these variations, talking necessarily of the same "inner city"?

A.
1. However, the inner city, which is fortified, was not attacked.
2. However, the inner city that is fortified was not attacked.

B
1. However, part of the inner city, which is fortified, was not attacked.
2. However, the part of the inner city that is fortified was not attacked.

My guess is that we can`t be quite sure in A, as we can in B.

Para quem está aprendendo o idioma, vale a pena seguir o conselho dado pela autoridade que você referenciou: de se manter dentro do uso tradicional.

Mas o autor não está dizendo que é uma "acusação séria". Ele discute objetivamente a mudança que tem ocorrido no uso de 'which' e 'that', que, de certa forma, invalida a 'regra'.

Veja o parágrafo final. Eu sublinhei o conselho do autor:

"If you wish to write naturally, don’t fuss too much about the usage of that versus which. Obsessive correction (sarcastically called a which hunt) is best avoided. If your sense of the language is not strong enough to be sure of the right pronoun, use that for the restrictive cases and which for the others and you won’t go wrong."

That-clauses make relative clauses shorter. I'd settle for that-clauses.

Aí, diz que "which" é para Orações Subordinadas Adjetivas Explicativas e o "that" é para Orações Subordinadas Adjetivas Restritivas; esta é uma acusação séria, daí vim aqui para ter uma confirmação. A informação procede?

Outra diferença importante entre essas duas formas e que "which" e mais comumente usado em situaçoes formais, enquanto "that" soa mais informal, coloquial, como nas conversas do dia-a-dia.

O mesmo vale para "that" e "who", quando se refere a pessoas.
