What's the meaning of "sit nursing"?
The part taken from my book:
[...] Three days after coming out of hospital, Simpson sits nursing a glass of red wine in an Oxford hotel [...]

Eu acrescentaria uma componente "devagarinho" nursing a glass of red wine (...bebericando um copo de vinho tinto/degustando lentamente um copo de vinho tinto..."
Sipping on a beer or nursing a glass of wine will take longer than taking a shot and is recommended because the alcohol won't hit you all at once.
(from the Reverso context, and there the "nursing" was translated into "bebericando".)
She's been nursing the same glass of wine for the last half hour.
(here they translated simply as "bebendo" but also "for the last half hour" conveys the idea of "demora", of "lentamente/sem pressa alguma".
This one nursing is in the context of drinking something.
But not all "nursings" are equal, if you are at home "nursing a headache" it means you are at home, "taking care" of yourself, taking medicines, drinking water, lying in bed, etc. Same goes to "nursing a hangover" etc.
