In American English, a "disciplina" or "cadeira" is a course. Students enroll in courses, which make up a program. Completing a program grants the student a degree, provided all requirements for degree completion have been met.

In Australia and in the UK, a course refers to the entire program that you need to complete to earn a degree. A course is made up of "units", or "modules" or "subjects". It's the complete opposite of how the word "course" is used in the US. Confusing isn't it?
