"Pull the rug from under someone´s feet" and "(to) throw a bucket of cold water over someone´s plans/optimism, etc"
Or still: to discourage one´s from something, to put off someone´s plans, etc.

It wouldn´t be exactly "puxar o pau da barraca" but "puxar o tapete" ou "fazer desistir" etc. Anyway, my gut feeling pointed somewhat in that direction!

It looks like my instinct was correct then, glad that I could help you out, Lu.
I´ll give you a vote. Not that your description was right or the usual way (in Portuguese), but because the question is pertinent just the same. ;)
That is, now the learners have two topics that somehow have a connection (more than you had bargained for, he hee).
