Her x Them: Como utilizar

1. Sometimes you need to stay away from the person you love, but it does not mean you love her less. Sometimes you love her even more.

2. Sometimes you need to stay away from the person you love, but it does not mean you love them less. Sometimes you love them even more.

Which one is correct, guys?
I think it's numer 2, but I have no clue WHY.

Tks in advance.

P.S.: I asked this question in this section because I think there is a grammatical explanation for this.

L. Lande,

As duas estão corretas.

Leia sobre o assunto, que já foi totalmente discutido aqui:

Poderíamos re(e)screver a frase mais ou menos assim:

1. Sometimes staying away from the one you love does not mean you love him or her less. Sometimes you love him or her even more.

ou, dando contorno outro,

2. Staying away from your loved one does not necessarily mean you love him or her less. You may love him or her much more.

Quem conseguir re(e)screvê-la de forma que fique ainda menor NÃO ganhará um doce, mas me deixará de queixo caído.

1. Sometimes staying away from the one you love does not mean you love him or her less. Sometimes you love him or her even more.

Typically we use "any less" in such cases. Here's a possible rewrite that avoids the pronoun agreement issue and the overuse of "him or her":

1. Sometimes staying away from the one you love does not mean you love that person any less. It could mean greater love.

Note: Why should the masculine form always come first? If you want to be really evenhanded, you should alternate religiously between "he and she" and "she and he", and between "him or her" and "her or him", "his and hers" and "hers and his", etc. (What I'm really saying is, learn to revise and survive.)
