O que quer dizer "increased by less than"

Olá pessoal,

Sou novo por aqui, mas é possível que eu vire um usuário frequente já que trabalho muito com pesquisa em material inglês...

A minha dúvida é sobre o significado da expressão no título. "increased by less than"

O contexto é o seguinte:

the brain's energy consumption is increased by less than 5% of its baseline energy consumption while performing a focused mental task. These experiments showed that the brain is constantly active with a high level of activity even when the person is not engaged in focused mental work (the resting state). His lab has been primarily focused on finding the basis of this resting activity and is credited with many groundbreaking discoveries.
