O que significa "to set oneself to doing"

Olá,
A minha dúvida veio de uma frase, a frase era "I set myself to making dinner". Quando eu traduzi ou pelo menos tentei o significado que eu obti foi "Eu me ponho a fazer o jantar", mas esse significado é meio estranho. Vocês poderiam me ajudar?

I set myself to making dinner.
Eu comecei a fazer o jantar.
(GET TO DOING SOMETHING - start some activity.)
So, the translation wasn´t off-base, only it didn´t catch the nuance of "começando". But it could be implied, so we couldn´t say that it´s wrong.
"eu me ponho" could mean "eu comecei" - so, also it could have the meaning of "starting" the activity of making the dinner. I think slightly more used in this sense in Portuguese of Portugal.

Whereas, if it was this way:
"I set myself to make dinner." would be more likely if one means a specific task at a given time.
Eu decidi/resolvi fazer o jantar.

Somente complementando a resposta do Paulo quanto a dar algo para alguém fazer...
O set dá a ideia de marcar alguém para uma tarefa. "Eu me escolhi para fazer o jantar" continua estranho, mas tente absorver a ideia geral. O interlocutor diz que se escolheu (no sentido de um trabalho mesmo, um compromisso) para fazer o jantar, por isso aquele estranho "me ponho..."
