Sobre "into the sails"

Encontrei esses 2 trechos, independentes, em um livro:
A- It took the piece of cloth and ran into the sails;
B- Jack started to climb up into the sails.

Por que usaram into the sails e não to the sails? Visto que não se move para dentro de uma vela (marítima), e sim em direção a ela.
