In some cases "principle" and "tenet" have an intersection in meaning, sometimes "principle" (many times also used in the plural "principles" in that sense) would mean "moral tenets" and other times meaning "doctrine/dogma/ideology" which works similarly to moral tenets.
Other than that, "tenet" meaning could be "basic or fundamental rule". It´s usual the following collocations "economic/cultural/religious/academic" tenets.
Principle - in addition to the meaning of "moral tenets" it can also mean "personal rule".
My source of study was the Wordreference, there you can see how it works in a sentence, the words were looked up in their English-Portuguese dictionary.
Of course, I don´t mean to exhaust the subject of "tenet vs principle", these are just 'guidelines' (rules of the thumb) that might be of help to learners in their use of English.

Principle - Refere-se a uma ideia básica que explica como coisa funciona ou acontece.
Tenet - É uma ideia básica que é aceita por um determinado grupo como crença. Não necessariamente representa a verdade.

- The country is run on socialist principles / O país é controlado por princípios socialistas
