Fala, galera!
Na realidade a tradução é de uma frase um pouco maior que esta. Já que não coube no título, aí vai:
— "His masquerade clearly fooled the whole school, and no one would have been the wiser had he not told us the truth"
A minha dúvida é em relação ao excerto em negrito... ao meus olhos juvenis está tudo misturado, não consigo entender o sentido deste trecho!! Ayuda, plx!

E ninguém teria sacado/percebido/descoberto...etc se ele não tivesse contado a verdade.
Had he not told - has a meaning of "se ele não tivesse". It could be also said "should he not told..." with the same meaning (just a slitghtly more formal, perhaps).

Compreendi o sentido agora! Vejo que o meu bloqueio advém muitas vezes da dificuldade com o manejamento das palavras em determinados tempos verbais...

Let´s leave the "should" thing out of the above context, please. "...had he not told us" will do (it is more of a "se/caso ele não tivesse nos contado)
"should he not" may have several senses in and could get things confused.
