Try something on someone= Testar algo em alguem, a pessoa é objeto de seja la o que voce ta tentando/testando.

Nao tem a mesma funçao de "with" nesse contexto, que seria pra tentar algo com/junto de alguém.

I wasn't familiar with it being used in either of those contexts you mentioned, thanks for pointing it out. There's a good chance the sentence means one of those things, indeed.

Nesse caso da diferença de with e on, como eu diferencio, se possível me mostre exemplos
