"To hit the bricks"

In many cities in the USA, the early city streets were made of brick. When police officers left the station to begin their patrols, they "would hit the bricks". I've only heard this used in the sense "to leave the office, go somewhere within the city, etc." I've never heard it in the sense of "to travel, go to another city, etc."

To hit the trail

This expression probably comes from the slang of the American cowboy. Just after the American Civil War (1861-1865) and before the railroad started reaching isolated towns, cattle had to be moved by cowboys from the ranches to cities where there was a railroad. The railroad would then take the cattle to Chicago and other large cities where they would be converted into steaks. The routes used by the cowboys and cattle were called "trails".

Here's an old cowboy song:

Early in the springtime we round up the dogies
Mark them and brand them and bob off their tails
Round up the horses and load the chuck wagon
Throw them little dogies right out on the trail.

(Early in the springtime, we gather the calves [young cattle]
We identify the owner of the cattle by slicing the ear in a certain way, we brand them permanently on a hip, and we cut off the tail
We gather the horses and put supplies on the wagon we will use as a kitchen
And we get the young cattle moving on the trail that will take them to the railroad)

Well, I have to hit the trail. Have to buy some things at the supermarket.
