Como dizer "Não senti nenhum terremoto (...)" em inglês

Hi, guys!
I wanted to say: "Não senti nenhum terremoto enquanto estava no Japão", then I wrote "I didn't feel any earthquake while I was in Japan", but I got that awful feeling that there may be something missing or misplaced in this sentence.
I've considered to use "I hadn't felt" instead of "I didn't feel", then I realised that it was one of my blind spots.
How do I figure which one would be more proper in such cases? Is there some website, topic or lesson concerning this?
