"Exciting match" would do, for lack of a dramatic word. But then, with soccer one never knows; the commentator guys there, seeing the have to be given some slack (say poetic licence and all).
By the way, the Hungary x England friendly game (on November 25, 1953) was hailed by the English press as "the match of the Century". In fact, Hungary was then an Olympic Champion and undefeated by three years.
Nothing to be afraid of, England was the inventor of the football.
Then, England underestimated Hungary and was trashed! The scoreline was 6-3. The press had a new headline "the match taht changed the game", and in fact it was, the tactics Hungary brought to the match was a novelty.
But then, England did it again, underestimated Hungary again and was beaten 7-0. Just six months after the said "match of the century"!
Such matches! You can name them "epic matches" , it happens! Epic matches
(that make history/that made history
, to reinforce the dramatic effect).A remarkable duel/match
is another way to express a great match (gosh, I am very dramatic today...)
