Boy am I glad that you wrote this post. I had been misunderstanding the word tomara and thinking it meant the expression of a wish or hope.

Please check these translations:
I hope it will be sunny tomorrow. (complete as it is).
Espero que faça sol amanhã?

If only the sun would shine tomorrow, (cries for completion, adding what will happen if the sum does shine)
I'd ride my bike down the Rhine River.

Hope, wish, want may be used too, but they do not mean exactly "if only", in port. Mainly bra.

I hope she comes- I want her to come.
If only she comes - I'm willing, a big desire.

Tomara in port might mean hmm some verbal tense with the verb "tomar", I don't know when to use it in port, not used that much.

But all in all "tomara" means "if only",

I also don't know whether this is true or not. But I think it is much more logical that the interjection "tomara" was invented first and then "tomara que caia" derivated from it.

Eu estava nos States mês passado e, conversando com uma americana sobre algo que eu queria que acontecesse, ela respondeu: 'Hopefully'.

A: Espero que faça sol no próximo domingo.
B: Tomara (que sim)!

Hopefully era o que o Edgar que trabalhava comigo em miami dizia quando eu perguntava para ele:

Será que ...? Ele dizia...hopefully

No mesmo sentido equivalente a I hope so! ou tomara...esperançosamente...e por ai vai...
