Diferentes usos de GET

Olá,
Por que o GET é usado na frase abaixo?
"What if we never get to do it again?"

I'd like examples of similar uses.
Thanks in advance

"What if we never get to do it again?"

"With an infinitive," says my grammar guide, "get can mean 'manage', 'have an opportunity' or 'be allowed.'"

We didn't get to see the UFO--they hid it. Or so it seemed to us.
Jackanapes never got to go to college = He never had an opportunity to go to... someone or something (old age, lack of money, love etc) wouldn't allow him to... or prevented him going to...

My grammar guide further states that "Get + infinitive can also suggest gradual development."

You'll get to speak English more easily as time goes by = You'll gradually muster the art of conversation in English as time...
You'll find him a nice person when you get to know him.

dictionary.com, in turn, says get to equates to succeed, become enabled, or be permitted: You get to meet a lot of interesting people. (Getting to know some people'll probably take some hanging around. The more you linger, the more people you get to know/meet etc. Just don't take them for granted.)

Olá Ichy,

Complementando:

"Get" é usado neste caso com o sentido de "ter a chance, oportunidade de".

"E se nós nunca mais tivermos a chance de fazer isto de novo?"

*Existem umas quinze situações específicas com "get".
