Just keep in mind that "for instance" is more formal than "for example".

Sim, existe muita interoperabilidade entre os dois termos quando queremos dizer "exemplo".

"I can say, for instance, that roses are red."

Quando queremos dizer "caso," ou "instância," ou "situação," instance pode ser melhor:

"Yes, roses are generally red, but not in this instance."
"His behaviour was inappropriate in that instance."

Para complementar eu diria que podem ser sinônimos principalmente nas expressões "for example" e "for instance" e como disse o Tiago "instance" é mais formal.Há algumas diferenças quando fora destas expressões.Veja:
