Note: To loan is more used in American English, and means the same thing as the verb to lend. They used this verb only for the concrete meaning - the opposite of to borrow - not the figurative one. Loan can also be used as a noun, which means "empréstimo" in Portuguese.

The verb To lend can also be used figuratively to mean to contribute, to impart or to offer. Check the examples:

(1) Loan me a hand. = Lend me a hand. = Dê-me uma mão (informal) = Ajude-me (formal).

(2) The yellow wall will loan a feeling of warmth. = The yellow wall will lend a feeling of warmth. = A parede amarela proporcionará uma sensação de calor.
