Other one or Other somente

É possível fazer frases sem one ou ones? Tem algum caso?
Exemplo:
A – I like the chocolate cookie.
B – I prefer the other.

Poderia parar aqui? Sem perguntar o restante?
A – The vanilla one?
B – Yes, the vanilla one.

Porque vejo sempre com "one ou ones." Se estou olhando dois vestidos de materiais diferentes posso dizer:

"I like this blue cotton" ou tenho que dizer "I like this blue cotton one?"

Se estou comparando dois vestidos, eu tenho que dizer "The material of this one is lighter." ou posso também dizer "The material of this one is lighter than the other ( one )."?
