Não acho que tenha uma tradução literal para isso, mas eu diria:

A hammer hit my thumb.

Friends, I would not recommend "A hammer hit my thumb" or "I bruised my thumb against a hammer." I am not being sarcastic and I am not making fun of anyone when I say that "A hammer hit my thumb" makes it sound like it was the hammer's fault. I was reading a book, having a Coke, and a hammer sneaked into the room and -- without any provocation -- attacked my thumb. No, it doesn't happen like that. I hit my thumb with a hammer by accident. And
I bruised my thumb with a hammer (or when I hit it with a hammer). Is there a need to add "by accident"? Surely people won't think I did it on purpose.
