Ex: I went to the military base this morning?

Uma colaboração.
Quartel em inglês está mais para barracks.
"This was a bombing again of a U.S. Military barracks, in Saudi Arabia."

I joined the army.
Um quartel em si seria "heardquarter".
In the U...S. There are the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), perhaps you could say "the processing station place" in colloquial ways.

Thanks, Correa for your invaluable insights and excellent collaboration.
In addition to the previous information, in the U.S. Related to the army military installations (and somehow, personnel serving there) could be "post" (or in a more general way "unit").
Fort Hood is a United States Army post located near Killeen, Texas.
Sometimes they also might call a big unit (related to personnel, equipments, and buildings) a "base":
Is Fort Campbell a good army base?
There are Army, Air Force, and Navy bases as well.
