Olá Pessoal,

Apesar de "win" significar "vencer" não se deve usá-lo sempre, vejam:

1)We beat Africa.(Vencemos a África,derrotamos a África.)
2)We defeated Africa.(Vencemos a África.)
3)We won the game.(Ganhamos o jogo.)
4)We won the championship.(Vencemos o campeonato.)

*Quando se vence alguém(derrota) pode-se usar beat ou defeat.Mais uma curiosidade:Invícto=Unbeaten, undefeated.

A very common expression used among friends (not formal!) is "to kick ass".
Inter kicked Gremio's ass last night at Beiramar.

We cannot say "We won Africa" because the meaning is not "we had a victory over Africa" but "Africa was given to us as a prize in a contest/game".
We won $1,000,000 in the lottery. OK
We won a new car in the drawing. OK
We won scholarships for our essays about the fishing rights of the Tupi Indians. OK

Note that "to win" does not have the same meaning of "to receive, obtain" as with "ganhar".
Ganhei um presente na festa. = I was given (I got) a present at the party. (NOT "I won a present at the party." That would mean you were in a contest and the present was a prize, something awarded to you for winning a game or contest.)
Onde ganhou o livro?
= Where did you get (find, obtain) the book? ("Where did you win the book?" would mean that it was a prize, that you had received it after winning a contest or game.)

Here are some possible uses of "to overcome":
It will be difficult for you to succeed in life without the use of your legs, but you will overcome.
We must overcome adversities to find happiness.
She was shy and timid, but she overcame her bashfulness and eventually became a well respected public speaker.
thanks a lot!!
