Hi Umapessoanormal!
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a journal is "a record of experiences, ideas, or reflections kept regularly for private use"; in this sense, it's synonymous with "diary". When you look at the definition of "diary" at the same dictionary, it gives you that "diary" means "a record of events, transactions, or observations kept daily or at frequent intervals : JOURNAL".
So, you're right, "journal" is a false friend, holding a different meaning from "newspaper", once that is made for a private use. However, I've found out that "journal" appears as the name of a famous newspaper, "The Wall Street Journal"; but watch out: in this case, "journal" is far closer to the meaning of "daily news" than to "newspaper".
