Know Thyself: Significado e Tradução

Lendo um artigo em inglês me deparei com o termo thyself que não conhecia. Pesquisando seu significado descobri que existe uma expressão muito comum no inglês onde ela aparece: know thyself.

A tradução de know thyself, segundo a Wikipédia, é "conhece a ti mesmo" que na literatura grega é uma máxima, ou aforismo (uma sentença concisa que geralmente encerra um preceito moral), que significa "o provérbio é aplicado àqueles que tentam ultrapassar o que são".

Já o termo thyself usado sozinho ainda não está claro para mim. Segundo o Cummings Study Guides, thyself é um pronome usado no tempo de Shakespeare e dá o seguinte guia de uso:

• Case: Reflexive or intensive. Examples: Wash thyself. Thou thyself art a fool.
• When Used: To address a person of inferior status, such as a child or servant; to address a friend; to impart a poetic ring when expressing profound thoughts or reciting a prayer.
• Verb Endings: -t, -st, -est. Examples: Thou thyself art, thou thyself hadst.

If you don’t like this, and you want to stay beyond the reach of the algorithms, there is probably just one piece of advice to give you, the oldest in the book: know thyself. As long as you have greater insight and self-knowledge than the algorithms, your choices will still be superior and you will keep at least some authority in your hands. If the algorithms nevertheless seem poised to take over, it is mainly because most human beings hardly know themselves at all.
