"Was here" x "Stayed here": Qual é o certo?

The second one.
But you didn't tell us if u wanted "O próprio autor esteve aqui para autografar o livro" (was) or "O próprio autor ficou aqui para autografar o livro" (stayed). Not even in portuguese it would be used this way.
Use "was". It's better.

Perhaps that's just a sentence he saw in a book.
But, even if you think this way, why would somebody else autograph another person's book?
