Como é o correto dizer:
"The author himselft stayed here to autograph the book" ou "The author himself was here to autograph the book", por quê?

But you didn't tell us if u wanted "O próprio autor esteve aqui para autografar o livro" (was) or "O próprio autor ficou aqui para autografar o livro" (stayed). Not even in portuguese it would be used this way.
Use "was". It's better.
