Obrigada!

Pensei em:

"She'd absentmindely read the book."
"She'd face the book with a scattered mind."
I think scattered mind is not correct.

I would say one of the three options below:
Absent-mindedly or in a distracted manner/way.

I have/had to read the book +
I read the/a book +
Having to read a book +
I have to start reading a book +

Think again. A book reader can't accomplish much if s/he reads with a scattered mind. S/he simply won't focus, may not, or fail to, concentrate on what s/he reads about.

You are right, there is this term. I had never heard of this before. I am not English speaker though.

In some given context it could be something like this:

He was reading while thinking about something else.
He was reading, all of sudden he found himself thinking about something else.

He was reading, but, all of sudden, he found himself with lots of thoughts competing for his attention.
While he was reading, lots of thoughts competed for his attention.

And other ways, of course.

In another sense here:
While trying to read/reading he couldn´t stay focused.
As he was trying to read he wasn´t able to focus his attention (on the task at hand).
Encarava o livro = stared at the book
Dispersar, divagar = drift

She stared at the book, while her mind was drifting away.

Ou, aproveitando parte do post de Marcio, acima:

She absentmindedly stared at the book.
