Pensei em:

Where does the Thames River start?

Para perguntar o contrário: Where does the Thames River end?

Good one Marcio.

Just adding my twopence worth to the discussion:

Where does the Thames River begin?
Where does the Thames River originate?
Where does The Thames come from?
Where does The Thames actually come from?

Hi there, Cristi.

From what I have searched, I understand that rise is when a river "branches out", widens somehow, flooding some area (say, body of land by it.) or can serve as an outlet to some pond/lake (for example the Merrymeeting River is an outlet for the Merrymeeting Lake/Pond)

So, to the question "Where does the Merrymeeting river rise?" one would answer "it rises in a pond/in a lake of the same name. That is, it rises in the Merrymeeting Lake/Pond. (New Hampshire geography)

Of course, if I am not mistaken.

Hey PPaulo
Where is the Thames River headwaters? (from a native American)
The water of the river comes from a source and from there it flows. That is the explanation I received when I first heard "rises" to describe the start point of a river.

Yes and no.
Think of headwaters as "a nascente", so the above question would mean "aonde é a nascente do Rio Thames?" not exactly "aonde nasce o Rio Thames?".

Granted, I am a bit of a nitpicker on the matter if you think of it. Because, the river comes from a "nascente" (headwaters - generally a stream or some streams)

The very definition of "nascente" in Portuguese goes like that, since it can mean from "fonte, nascedouro, veio" to "riacho, cabeceira, regato (which in turn means - riacho/ribeiro etc)

What I mean is, a river "nascente" many times has a ring of a "stream", whereas when we ask where it "begins, originate" etc, would be more specific and leaving no room to that thought.

So, a river may originate from a "veio" to a "stream", as you see even in Wikipedia it seems as it is not exact science, nor is the definition of "rise".
Of course a stream can be a source/origin of a river, but not always a origin comes from a stream.

Just saying, for the sake of discussion, as I am no expert on hidrography or something. All that is out of interpretation a little bit. So more comments are welcome, and I am proud that you are looking into it, doing some research on the side. ;)
My point is, with some words can´t be definite.
