Me parece que esta é a expressão idiomática mais adequada para traduzir perder as estribeiras.
Perdi as estribeiras=I lost my temper

to lose one's temper= to become very angry

Então, parece haver uma diferença entre as duas expressões. Eu sempre entedi a última como perder a paciência.

Por exemplo,
"When she lost her temper she felt utterly helpless."

e a segunda como quando perdemos a paciência e a compostura, isto é, agimos foras dos padrões sociais esperados de nós em virtude de um momento de descontrole. Por exemplo,

"Somsak went berserk, killed Malee, and then dies of cardiac failure."
"He went bersek and destroyed my home town."
"He went berserk and started thrashing everybody."

Tudo parece esclarecido. Infelizmente, existem exemplos como:

"He lost his temper and killed an Egyptian."

Algumas pessoas, dizem rodar a baiana ao invés de perder as estribeiras. Todos os exemplos foram copiados da internet. Como diz o ditado: Nada se cria, tudo se copia.

As you can see, "berserk" comes from "beserker" and refers to a warrior from Scandinavia who would go mad/crazy in combat and was reputed to be of great power. In English today, it merely means angry, crazy, possibly violent and uncontrolled, etc. However, it is common to use the expression to exaggerate the person's anger. But it doesn't always refer to anger. If you invite 20 children to eat ice cream on a very hot day, they will probably go berserk with joy.
